Importance of Fire Evacuation Drills for Residential Buildings

Importance of Fire Evacuation Drills for Residential Buildings

To enable the Managing Committee to fulfill its obligation under the Maharashtra Fire Act 2007.

In case of a fire in a High-rise building, safe evacuation of its occupants may present serious problems unless a plan for orderly and systematic evacuation is prepared in advance and all occupants are trained in execution of the plan.

Conducting Fire Evacuation Drills is very important in all buildings, but in High-rises, it becomes extremely crucial and critical.

High-rise building is defined as a building more than 15 metres in height (approx. 5 floors).

As per the provisions of National Building Code 2016 (NBC-2016) lays down the requirements of the fire drills in Part IV, ANNEX D, Clause D-3 DRILLS, as under:

D 3.1 – “Fire Drills shall be conducted, in accordance with the Fire Safety Plan, at least once every three months for buildings during the first two years. Thereafter, fire drills shall be conducted at least once every six months.”

D 3.2 – All occupants of the building shall participate in the fire drill……

D 3.3 – A written record of such drills shall be kept on the premises for a three year period….

In the interest of Resident Safety and also to avoid any penal actions against the Managing Committee members

The procedure to conduct the fire drill is given in the video:
